She says early detection of speech and language issues is important, so problem areas can be identified and helped. Richardson lists some speech problems in Qld's children, she says that a lot of children are unable to pick up language as well as their peers, lots of children with hearing impairments have trouble speaking, children with motor speech disorders, and children who have suffered trauma or neglect in the early years of their lives. Richardson says the iPhone is becoming increasingly popular in treatment because it has a lot of applications that deal with speech. Richardson goes on to discuss speech therapy for adults. She says that Speech Pathology Week is about raising the awareness of what speech pathologists do and how they can help. 26/08/2010
ABC Newcastle Mornings (Newcastle, NSW) – Brodie Warren. Interview with Brodie Warren, Speech Pathologist, John Hunter Hospital, talking about speech pathology and the importance of the first few years for children in line with Speech Pathology Week. It's theme this year is 'Vocation Communication'. Warren says she works at the Children's Hospital and they see the kids who have speech or language difficulties. She says they see children with complex feeding difficulties and in the community, many speech pathologists will see children who have problems with speech or understanding. She talks about treating children individually. Duncan talks about her second child and her previous concerns regarding speech. Warren discusses the first words of children. She proceeds to discuss research into kids in a multi lingual household. She suggests that the first call of parents who may have concerns will be their GP, the local child health nurse and speech pathologists in any of the Hunter Health's community health centres.

Therapeutic intervention may work on varying aspects of communication including:
- Speech
- Writing
- Gesture
- Facial expression
- Signing
- Augmentative and alternative communication eg. picture-based systems
Some examples of where communication difficulties/disorders may impact on a person’s vocation:
- Professional voice users such as teachers, actors, newsreaders and singers must ensure their voices have the capacity to meet the daily demands of their work
- School-aged children need to be able to grasp the educational curriculum, learn to decode and encode written forms of information and to negotiate, understand and communicate with their peer group
- A teenager requires the ability to engage in the intrinsic language of job interviews and tertiary education
- Adults juggle the daily communication of running a home, interacting in the workplace and being an active member of the community: processing the various forms of media, impact of government policy and social communication
- Older adults dealing with retirement must navigate a ‘new world’ that continues to change and challenge the mediums of communication with which they were familiar.
