AAC Awareness Month
International Augmentative and Alternative Communication Awareness Week
October is the month to Celebrate and raise awareness of people using AAC (augmentative and alternative communication).
The American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) reports that, “several studies suggest eight to 12 people per 1,000 experience sever speech impairments that require AAC.” While the actual number of people who need, but do not have access to AAC is unknown, the technology is rapidly advancing and using innovative methods to improve communication.
The International Society of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC) aims to spread the word that AAC methods should be explored exhaustively and relentlessly, until a method is found that enables individuals without effective speech to communicate naturally anytime, anywhere – with anyone and about anything.
Events to mark International AAC Awareness Week are being carried out nationwide. Below are details of some of these events.
