Speech pathologists are specialists trained to assess and treat people of all ages who have a communication or swallowing disorder. Speech Pathologists work in a variety of settings including early intervention, schools, hospitals, community and rehabilitation centres, aged care facilities, specialist centres and in private practice. You don’t need a referral to see a speech pathologist in private practice but some public services will have specific eligibility criteria. Speech Pathology services can be rebated under certain ancillary tables of private health funds. A Medicare rebate may apply if referred by a doctor under the Medicare Enhanced Primary Care Plan or the Helping Children with Autism Medicare items.
It is common for speech pathologists to provide client management in consultation with the client’s doctor, specialist, teacher or other professionals.
You can find a speech pathologist who is a member of Speech Pathology Australia by clicking on the link below. Other information provided will give you further details on the role of the speech pathologist and how they assist people with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties. Additional information is also provided concerning rebates and funding programs for speech pathology services.
