1 in 4 children start school behind in communication: SPA featured across ABC News

Speech Pathology Australia featured prominently across ABC News on Sunday, with TV and online reports highlighting the vital role of speech pathologists. On Monday, National President Kathryn McKinley was interviewed and appeared in multiple news bulletins.

Speaking to the ABC's Specialist Reporting Team, Kathryn explained that without early intervention, speech and language difficulties can affect a child's literacy, learning, social interactions and mental health.

The coverage also shared the stories of Jade, Riley and students at Morwell Park Primary School, demonstrating the life-changing difference that access to speech pathology can make.

With 1 in 4 children starting school developmentally behind in communication, early access to speech pathology is critical.

The story highlighted the need for a national approach so that no child misses out on the support they need.

SPA thanks journalists Mary Lloyd and Nas Campanella for their in-depth reporting and for raising awareness of this important issue.
