Accreditation provides assurance that graduating speech pathology students meet the certification requirements of Speech Pathology Australia and are therefore eligible for Certified Practising membership of Speech Pathology Australia.
Speech Pathology Australia also uses the accreditation standards to monitor accredited programs and ensure they continue to meet the accreditation standards (AHPRA and National Boards, 2022).

Practice placements and supervision
From 1 January 2023, all Australian speech pathology degree programs must comply with Accreditation Standard (2022) criterion 32:
The practice education placement program meets the following criteria:
- The majority of student placements must be:
- in Australia
- with service users who reside in Australia
- with practice educators who reside in Australia
- assessed by practice educators who hold or are eligible for Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) status.
- At least one near-entry level/penultimate or entry-level placement in Australia, which includes in-person, face-to-face service delivery.
- The majority of placements are with real, rather than simulated, service users.
