QLD Update on Developmental Language Disorder

Workshop summary

The move towards international widespread adoption of the term ‘Developmental Language Disorder’ (DLD) has reignited interest in this area. This workshop will guide participants through recent developments in our understanding of DLD, to support them in their clinical practice.

Learning objectives
The move towards widespread international adoption of the term ‘Developmental Language Disorder’ has reignited interest in this area of clinical practice. Reconsideration of the theories that inform our understanding of DLD has had an impact on approaches to assessment. Our constant strive for EBP has led to increased research in the area. We have also seen a rise in treatment studies that are embedded in clinical practice, which can be drawn on to inform our own clinical practice. 
This workshop will guide participants through recent literature and research to support them in their clinical practice across the health and education sectors.

The workshop will consist of a mix of lecture style content, interactive discussion and activities. Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will:

  • Have an understanding of recent developments in the area of developmental language disorder; 
  • Consider the implications of the Catalise Consortium papers and DSM5 for assessment and diagnosis and apply this to their workplace context;
  • Understand the current evidence supporting the role of speech pathologists at the different tiers of intervention;
  • Apply the evidence to their own clinical practice – drawing on the findings from recent treatment effectiveness research in the domains of semantics and morpho-syntax at the word,
    sentence and discourse levels (including narrative discourse).

Who should attend?

Registrants must be speech pathologists, or final year speech pathology students who have completed a placement with school age children.
This workshop is relevant for clinicians (and student clinicians) with some knowledge or experience working with children with language difficulties.
