Speech Pathology Australia (the Association) is a membership organisation that draws its strength from its members. As the national peak body for the speech pathology profession in Australia, the Association has several categories of membership 

The Association's membership year starts on 1 July and finishes on 30 June.

 Applications for the 2024-25 membership year will open on 3 June 2024.

Have you just finished your Speech Pathology course and are applying for Certified Practising membership (CPSP) for the first time?

Speech Pathology Australia has several categories of membership that are outlined below. 

Please read about the different categories in order to choose the appropriate application form to submit to National Office along with all the relevant documentation and payment. 

Certified Practising member

This membership category is for suitably qualified speech pathologists engaged in activities of speech pathology practice who meet the Certification requirements for Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) status.

Certified Practising member (new graduate)

Have you completed your accredited Australian entry level speech pathology course within the last three years?
Complete the New Graduate application to be a Certified Practising member with Provisional CPSP status working towards full CPSP status. Please read the 'How to complete the new graduate application form' below prior to applying.

Joining Speech Pathology Australia as a new graduate (flowchart) 

NB. Certified Practising members (with full or provisional CPSP status) are entitled to a Speech Pathology Australia membership certificate and qualify for Medicare and Private Health fund Provider Number status.

Non Certified member

This member category is for suitably qualified speech pathologists engaged in activities of speech pathology practice who DO NOT meet CPD requirements and therefore are NOT eligible for CPSP status, who are joining for the first time or or rejoining after not being a member for at least two years. Non-certified membership is time limited for a maximum of one renewal period or 12 months which is ever the greater of the two. The non-certified member is provided with time to meet the CPSP requirements.

Non Practising member

This member category is for suitably qualified speech pathologists who are not engaged in the activities of speech pathology as practitioner, administrator, educator, researcher or any combination thereof. Nor do they receive remuneration for speech pathology activities.

Alumnus member

This application is available to members who have retired or are no longer working as a speech pathologist who have held Membership (Certified Practising, Non Certified or Non-practising) of the Association in the past for at least ten years.

Re-entry member

The Re-entry program and membership is aimed at speech pathologists previously eligible for practising membership with Speech Pathology Australia but who have been on a career break of more than five years and less than 15 years. You need to read further information about Re-entering the profession before applying.

Student member

Students enrolled in a speech pathology course recognised by Speech Pathology Australia are eligible for this category of membership. First year students are offered complimentary membership for their first year of study but must provide letter of offer as evidence to support this.
(If you have completed your studies and are awaiting results you are no longer eligible for student membership. If you are about to graduate and require Certified Practising membership to apply for a Medicare number please use the New Graduate application form.)

Are you joining Speech Pathology Australia as a New Graduate?

Full-time postgraduate

This reduced membership fee is for suitably qualified speech pathologists engaged in full-time post-graduate study (ie beyond entry-level qualifications) in a course recognised by the Association that will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s Degree or Doctor of Philosophy in speech pathology. Please complete the Certified Practising membership form.

Non Member Certified Practitioner 

A Non Member Certified Practitioner is a practising speech pathologist who has met Speech Pathology Australia's certification requirements to be eligible for Certified Practising Speech Pathologist status. Find out more
