Speech Pathology Week 2025

Impact through communication

πŸ“… Sunday, 24 August – Saturday, 30 August 2025

For Speech Pathology Week 2025, we're celebrating the incredible role speech pathologists play in helping people thrive at every stage of their lives. From young children to older Australians, speech pathologists are there, supporting wellbeing, confidence, connection, independence, inclusion and opportunity.

Around 1.2 million Australians need support with communication and behind every person, is a story, and a team of professionals making a real difference. Speech pathologists work across homes, schools, hospitals, and communities helping people live fuller, more connected lives.

From across the country, we share inspiring stories of speech pathologists and the people they support. These stories show the many ways communication changes lives.

Let’s shine a light on their impact, together.

Day 1: Connection through communication

Speech pathologists help people build
and sustain relationships that matter.

As university-trained allied health professionals, they work alongside individuals, families, and communities to achieve communication goals. Whether it is supporting a child with a developmental language delay, helping someone recover their speech after a stroke, or assisting someone to communicate in daily life, speech pathologists foster connections, understanding, and participation.

Day 2: Confidence through communication

Speech pathologists support people to express
themselves clearly and proudly.

Marcella: Building fluency, growing confidence

At a university clinic in Melbourne on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country, speech pathologist Ishita
has been supporting seven-year-old Marcella to grow in confidence and fluency.

Day 3:  Inclusion through communication

Speech pathologists make communication accessible for everyone.

Speech pathologists empower people to communicate in the way that works best for them. This might include:

  • using their voice to speak
  • accessing devices such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication aids and technology
  • using unaided supports like Auslan and Key Word Sign.

Sienna: Fearless in communication

In Brisbane on Turrbal Country, Sienna is a vibrant teenager with cerebral palsy and a love for Taylor Swift.

With the support of her speech pathologists, Jemma and Kirsty, she uses a communication device to share her ideas, express her humour, and connect with friends and family.

Day 4: Empowerment through communication

Speech pathologists help people express
their needs and make choices.

Daniel: Thriving through communication

In the Adelaide Hills on Peramangk Country, speech pathologist Kate has supported Dan and his
family for almost a decade. She has helped Daniel share his humour and personality with the world.

Day 5: Opportunity through communication

Speech pathologists open doors to learning,
work and community.

Kira: Expressing herself opens her world

In regional WA, in Geraldton on Yamatji Country, speech pathologist Teagan is supporting 25-year-old Kira to build her independence through communication. For Kira, this means accessing TAFE, ordering a drink, and taking part in her community with confidence. Their story shows how speech pathology creates opportunities for participation, connection and growth.

Day 6: Wellbeing through communication

Speech pathologists support expression and emotional connection.

Ada: Early intervention is building her future

Ada is a bright and determined two-year-old living in Myrtleford, on Taungurung Country. With the guidance of her speech pathologist, Jessie, she’s discovering new ways to feed, swallow, and communicate.

Day 7: Independence through communication

Speech pathologists build communication skills
for lifelong independence.
